You’ve heard the saying, “Do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”, right? It’s so true isn’t it?
I feel that way about volunteering and my work with HR Florida!
I became the president of HR Florida State Council earlier this year following in the path of strong volunteer leaders that stood in these shoes before me. When you think about it, it’s quite humbling to oversee the operations of one of the largest state councils under the SHRM umbrella and one that is as engaged and active as we are.
Often times I am asked about why I give so much of my time or how to manage to hold down two jobs?
First, let me say I have an amazing employer, All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine that sees the value in the human resources network and what than can bring to the organization. Second, I cannot imagine my professional growth and development having any greater impact than having been part of the local chapters and the council!
Part of my role as the president is to be out in the community meeting our chapter leaders, members and community leaders. I do this by speaking and visiting the chapters during their monthly meetings, conferences and community events. I learn so much from each chapter, network with professionals I might not otherwise meet that can benefit my professional development as well provide me with innovative ideas to bring back to my own organization.
Volunteering with HR Florida or any other organization is doing the Work I Love! I gain so much from volunteering and often feel I can’t give back as much as I gained so I keep at it. I have met some of the most amazing and talented people that I might not otherwise have met through my volunteer work over the past 20 years. These people have been part of my professional network and have played an important role in my professional development and success I’ve obtained thus far.
Whether you volunteer a homeless shelter, an animal rescue organization or with a professional association, Doing The Work We Love is where we contribute on the highest level and that my friends is where we have the greatest impact.
